Tire care. Taking care of your RV’s tires over the winter months will keep them at their best — store the rig on blocks, keep the tires properly inflated, and cover them against UV.

Exterior protection. An RV cover prevents sidewall fading and slows the deterioration of interior fabrics. Do not use plastic tarps, as they don’t breathe and can trap moisture.

Tips for winter RVing

Water system. Winterize by adding half a jug of RV antifreeze down the sink drain to the grey tank, and the other half down the toilet.

Watch the weather. Check the forecast along your whole route — highway conditions at elevation are nothing like the valley you are heading for.

Be ready for trouble. Carry thermal blankets, extra food, sand for traction, a windshield scraper and de-icer.

Off-grid provisions. Confirm water, firewood and generator availability before you set off.

Climate control. Manage indoor moisture with ventilation and a dehumidifier, and supplement the furnace with a space heater and a heated mattress pad.
